The internet: The media tell us children today spen more time surfing the Internet than playing in the street. Does this put them more at risk than their peers a hundred years ago? Give your supporting it with arguments and examples.

I disagree that children may be at risk when surfing in the Internet. For the past 5 years I have been making web sites and creating on-line services. So I do believe that I know what children use the Internet for, as well as the risks this poses. And of course I remember the time when children could only play in the street. That was actually my own childhood.

I don"t think that today"s children are more at risk surfing in the internet then their peers 100 years ago for the following reasons:

First Using Google, today children can find the answers of all questions they have. It offers them much more information than any book or library can do. I can say that they are much more informed than at risk compared with the children of their age 20 years ago.

The second reason is that there are many software products and tools to protect the children from web sites that can provide them illegal or adult content. With these tools every computer can be a safe place for kids. 100 years ago kids could only play in the street where they could break a leg or pick up the flu. There are many more risks for children in the streets than behind the computer screen.

The third reason is a kind of secret. While children are surfing the internet, we can control them. Parents can control the website that their kids visit, the administrators and webmaster can control what they do in the websites or chat rooms, and the police is watching them all the time. Young users of the internet are totally controlled but they don"t know it. They think that they are anonymous in this virtual world. It"s kind of virtual freedom but in fact there is not freedom on-line, there is only total control. And we all know how difficult it is to control children in the streets. We don"t know what they do at any time or who they are talking of playing with.

I think that the Internet is the safest place in the world, and it is a matter of time all people to understand this. Автор: Албена Иванова
