The media: Talent shows are supposed to encourage gifted people, yet good looks often seem to be the key to sucsess than actual abilities or talent. Do you agree or disagree? Give your opinion supporting it with arguments and examples.

I agree that good looks are often more important in the media than good abilities. Unfortunately, this is true for the media in this country as well as for many others. But not for countries.

Every day we see beautiful faces in the newspapers and on TV. But they are not sientiest or experts, they are just people with plastic surgery.

One of the reasons for this is that the media usually try to satisfy the general demands of the target audience. And this audience is not interested in culture or science. Recent statistics show that only 14% of the population in Bulgaria read books. This means that most people do not expect to find any special cultural or scientific information in the media. All they need is reality shows, beautiful women and stupid money games.

Last month there were more that 5 reality shows on Bulgarian TV chanals but none of these was about science or culture.  And this is a problem we share with many other low-cultured, developing countries.

Things are different in countries with cultural traditions. For example, there are so many British TV channels for culture and sience. Some of them are popular all over the world.

I belive with the free exchange of information things will improve in my country. More and more viewers and readers would like to follow the example of the developed countries. And the media will have to answer their demands for real pictures of the world that surrounds us. Then the TV channels and the newspapers will give priority to good abilities and talent. And good looks will have their prestigious place in beauty competitions, on the catwalk and in the gossip columns..
